A Soft Answer
Faith Compass
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Morning Light
Words leave the mouth fast and stay in the room a long time. You know the sentence you almost sent. You know the tone that would have won the moment and lost the person. A soft answer is not weakness. It is a choice to build instead of strike. Jesus did not answer His accusers with the heat they brought Him. He spoke truth, and He spoke it without becoming what they were. You do not have to match someone’s volume to be heard. If a hard word is sitting in your throat this morning, you can set it down. Grace still has a sentence that fits.
Walk It Out
Before you answer the tense message or the tense person, read Proverbs 15:1 once, out loud if you can.
Send or say one sentence that gives grace, not a speech that wins.
Quiet Place
Lord, You hear the sharp answer I want to give. I lay it down. I do not want to stir up what You are trying to quiet. Give me a soft answer that is still true. Keep corrupting talk out of my mouth, and put in its place a word that builds the person in front of me. Where I have already spoken too hard, give me the humility to make it right. Let my words sound like someone who has been forgiven. “A soft answer turns away wrath.” Proverbs 15:1 ESV
